a year and have had incredible results. My skin
used to be flaky and dry, now it is so soft and
smooth... 100% better. Thank you Veronika.”

The Three Things That Destroy Your Skin

There are three chemical processes taking place in your skin continuously that are responsible for the visible signs of aging.  While they cannot be stopped altogether, their effects can be diminished.

Free Radical Damage This is caused by the environment which leads cells to oxidize, creating dull, lifeless skin.  As we age, the skins antioxidant defense system weakens, losing its capacity to fight the oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

These naturally occurring free radicals are unstable and cause DNA damage in cells throughout the body, including the skin, leading to inflammation and deterioration of the cells. "How do antioxidants fight free radicals?"  Free radicals are unstable extra electrons that seek out other extra electrons from healthy cells, damaging them and creating more free radicals in the process.  Antioxidants bind to free radicals before they can cause this damage.  You cannot prevent free radical damage, however you can reduce it by using topical serums with Vitamin C, Vitamin E / d alpha tocopherol, Idebenone, reserveratrol and sunscreen, as well as a healthy diet rich in antioxidants.  The darker or more vibrant the fruit or vegetables, the more likely they are to be higher in antioxidants.

Glycation  This is caused by too much sugar in your diet which breaks down the support structure and leads to a loss of firmness and elasticity. Our bodies metabolize the sugars we eat for energy, but the excess that isn't burned as fuel can play a role in the deterioration of the skins youthful appearance.  When blood sugar goes up rapidly, sugars can bind to collagen, making the skin stiffer and less supple.  Glycation only happens when free radicals are present, which is another reason why antioxidants are essential for maintaining healthy, youthful looking skin.  The most important thing is to cut back on refined sugars to prevent them from having a detrimental effect on your skin and your health. A suggestion that I give to my patients, "Select one day a week to have your dessert indulgence, never more than 3 a week, it is too damaging."

Enzyme Inhibitors  MMPS ; Collagen eating enzymes are caused by the natural anatomy of the skin which destroys your skins support and structure leading to sagging skin, lines and wrinkles. In youthful skin, there is a higher level of collagen production and a lower level of collagen breakdown.  But as we age, collagen production declines and collagen destroying MMP enzymes increase, causing the breakdown of the skins underlying support structure. UV light and inflammation have been found to stimulate the production of these natural occurring MMP enzymes, but you can help keep them in check with topical retinoids and bioflavonoid antioxidants such as grape seed extract, as well as green and white tea extracts.  Since UV exposure is a main contributor to premature aging as a whole, as well as a proliferation of MMPs, sunscreen is an absolute must.  Be sure to select a broad spectrum sun protection that contains mexoryl or stabilized avobenzone that defend against both wrinkle accelerating UVA rays and sunburning UVB rays, along with a mineral sunblock ingredient, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide to deflect the sun's rays.
